Good make-up in film can be transformative on many levels. It can help to elevate the characters and provide another level to the depth of the narrative. 'Harvest' make-up artist Mikki Moulding talks about her background and career in film make-up.
How long have you been working as a make-up artist?
"I have been working as a make-up artist for five years."
What is your background and what was your route into this career?
"I actually studied fine art. I specialised in painting and sculpting and it was this passion that led me to begin experimenting with the sculpture of the human form and into painting bodies. I was fascinated by how the human body and face could become transformed by the application of make-up and prosthetics. With this intrigue about the human form, it seemed natural to me to pursue a career in film make-up artistry."
Who inspires your work?
"Prosthetic artists such as Shaune Harrison and Kristyan Mallet are huge inspirations to me.
"Shaun Harrison created the UK's first make-up academy in Manchester which is run by a professional make-up and prosthetics artist. He has worked on some of the biggest blockbusters in history including the 'Harry Potter' series, 'Star Wars' films and Marvel films. His work is incredible and the fact he is now passing on his knowledge to aspiring artists is incredible.
"Kristyan Mallet is a Bafta-nominated artist who has worked on films like 'The Theory of Everything', 'Les Miserables' and the 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. He has transformed some of the biggest names in Hollywood during his career, which is the ambition of every make-up artist, including myself."
How do you work? What are your methods?
"I like to prep a lot of my work at home, in particular, the sculpting and moulding. This gives me the initial independence that I enjoy working with. I like the freedom to allow myself to be creative and achieve the best possible results on each project."
What interests you about the project 'Harvest'?
"'Harvest' has a brilliant crew and cast as well as a storyline which is captivating. The world of 'Harvest' which Pallas Pictures are creating is exciting. The world of the creatures and the humans within it fascinate me and there is definitely an opportunity for some incredible make-up.
